Y6, 7, & 8 Forest Lakes Camp

Last week we went to Forest Lakes Camp.

We waterslide, ten pin bowling, basketball, mini golf, mudslide, confidence course, swimming and ate lots.  We had fun doing making our own acts for showtime.

We learnt lots of skills – how to dive, bowl, keep trying when things are hard.

Although we know why we have to do chores, they weren’t the most fun part of the camp.

Animations

We chose a Maui legend and retold the stories in Google Slides.

We included images – some were selected from those available on Explore and others were made by using the shapes tool.

We included soundtracks that were suitable and specific to the topic.

We duplicated the slides and adjusted them slightly each time.

Then when the viewer looked at it they could click through each slide to see it moving.

We’d like to make it move on it’s own and be animated. Do you how to do this? Can you tell us how?

Mini Market

We have been learning about product and marketing. We had to come up with a product that people would like to buy at a mini market.

We had to think about who our target group would be to decide what we would make. It was fun thinking about our ideas then having to work out what it is we will need to make our product.

Some people found that it was going to be difficult to actually make our product so had to change their mind and do something easier.

The importance of this unit was to show awareness about Product and Marketing. It involved literacy and maths and reguired a lot of problem solving as well as working with others and managing self so that we had something to sell at the Market.

What do you think about our creations?

To Bee or Not to Bee

Room 12 have been studying the wonderful world of Bee’s.

We have read all about them, done some maths about hexagons (the shape used in their hive and honeycomb), created handmade and digital art, and also written about them.

Here are some of our creations.

Do you think that the bees are all important? Well, I will tell you why we really need the DRONE BEES!

Firstly, Drones are male honey bees that develop unfertilised eggs laid by the queens. This is a special kind, it is called parthenogenesis from an unfertilised egg. Drone bees do not have stingers. Drones are larger than worker bees but usually smaller than the queen.

Secondly once the drones are with the female he dies instantly without drones the queen cannot produce female bees workers drones do not help with the hive but eat three times as much food compared to the workers this puts the on.

Finally the bee colony during cold months when food is drones are one usually forced out of the hive unfortunately the colony cannot support during the winter in the the queen will produce more drones drone bee it is a male honey bee ulike the female worker bee drones do not have stingers they gather neither nectarine pollen and are unable to feed with assistance from worker bees a drone’s only role is to mate with an unfertilised queen.

My opinion is that drone bees should have stingers so they can help protect the hive.

Creative Commons & Chrome Music Lab Songmaker

Do you know that you can have a say in how your creations are used?

Creative Commons licences allow you to mix and match to specify exactly how you’d like your creation to be used.

We created our own songs using Chrome Music Lab songmaker and our next step is to work out what licence we’d like to apply to them.

Peyton and Stevie-Ray made these songs. Click on their names to hear them.

Hanga he ahanoa ako Mamati & Te tuhi i to mata pona

Below is an example of one of the Digital Learning Objects (DLOs) we made for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. We found out that a digital learning object is any digital resource that can be reused to support learning.

We learnt how to make the background immovable and insert movable objects  in Google Slides to make our DLO interactive.

We had to:

  • Decide what our Digital Learning Object will be about.
  • Who is it for?
  • What might interest them?
  • What will it need to include?
  • How will we set it out and make it work?

Our next step is to record our screen so our users know what to do and then share them as copy only or view only so people can use them.

Using Images & remove.bg

Today with Whaea Michelle we looked at the idea of copyright and fair use. We learnt that we can find images that the creator has given the permission for others to use by clicking on Tools then Usage Rights in google search, and by using the explore tool in docs and slides.

We made our own images in google slides using remove.bg (a website that you can upload your photos to and remove the background from) and then placing our photo on a background image that we found by using the explore tool.

Here are the images we created …

Private and Personal Information

Today we looked at what information is personal and we are ok with sharing it on the web with others and what is private and we would keep to ourselves or share with selected people.

We then created a visual mihi to show personal information we are ok with sharing with others. Below you can see our mihi’s on the slide deck. While making these we learnt how to use the Explore tool to find images that are ok to use and don’t impact on anyone’s copyright. We also learnt to arrange and order images to send them to the front or back.

What can you tell about us when you look at them?
